PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser medium with optical amplification action using the optical transition of Eu in a mixed crystal compound and to provide a laser using that medium.;SOLUTION: The laser medium with optical amplification action uses the optical transition of Eu in the mixed crystal compound expressed by the chemical formula M1-xEuxGa2S4 (where M is one or more of Ca, Sr, Ba, and 0.01≤x1). The laser medium with optical amplification action uses the optical transition of Ce, Eu having the structure wherein thiogallate compound with Ce added to it and above-mentioned M1-xEuxGa2S4 mixed crystal compound are separately formed in the same crystal. The laser medium with optical amplification action uses the optical transition of Ce and Eu having the structure wherein both of thiogallate compound with Ce added to it and above-mentioned M1-xEuxGa2S4 mixed crystal compound are combined.
