Disclosed are apparatus and methods for providing recovery and backoff rules for hybrid coordinators of IEEE 802.11e quality of service (QoS) radio stations. The present invention has a wireless local area network capable of using a recovery and backoff rule of the present invention in a medium access control (MAC) layer of a QoS hybrid coordinator. The HC recovery and backoff rules of the present invention minimize collisions, particularly when there are hybrid coordinators of overlapping basic service sets.
