PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for adjusting the position of a color combining optical system by which the position of the color combining optical system is accurately performed with respect to an optical component casing which accommodates optical components composing a color separation optical system. SOLUTION: The method for adjusting the position of a color combining optical system by which the position of the color combining optical system is adjusted with respect to the optical component casing which accommodates the color separation optical system, is provided with a laser beam emission process S53 in which a white laser beam is emitted to the optical axis of a light beam which passes through the optical component casing, a combined light detection process S56 in which light beams of respective colors which are separated from the white color laser beam with the color separation optical system are made incident to a light incident end face of the color combining optical system and the light beam combined with the color combining optical system is detected with a detector, and a position adjustment process S55 in which the position of the color combining optical system with respect to the optical component casing is adjusted while performing the combined light detection process S56.
