PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To take measures against liquefaction by improving ground around the pile foundation of a structure, and forming an improved area integrally with the pile foundation, the improved area reaching an unliquefied layer located below the structure. ;SOLUTION: To reinforce a building structure 2 constructed close to a bulkhead 1 on a pile foundation 3, the ground located around the piles 3 is improved and hardened, and an improved ground area 14 reaching bedrock 5 is formed around and integrally with the piles 3. In the event of liquefaction of the ground 4 in an earthquake, the bulkhead 1 is forced away by the ground 4 and displaced toward the sea, and the ground 4 undergoes side fluidization. Therefore, the ground 4 under the structure 2 is also moved toward the foundation part of the bulkhead 1 and weakened, but since piles 3 are integrated with the improved area 14 and increased in cross-sectional area to remarkably enhance their flexural rigidity, deformation is restrained; also, since the improved area 14 reaches the bedrock 5, the piles 3 remain stable. Therefore, damage to the structure can be prevented, and costs can be reduced because only the ground near the pile foundation is improved.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
