In one embodiment, there is provided a process for producing vinyl chloride from ethane / ethylene, in order to convert substantially all of the C2 hydrocarbon feed the reaction product containing (a) ethane, or mixtures thereof ethylene , and to generate a product stream containing hydrogen chloride and vinyl chloride under conditions sufficient, in a reactor containing a suitable catalyst, and process, mixing an oxygen source and a chlorine source and (b) unreacted the method comprising the step of recycling to return for use in the process of (a) hydrogen chloride. C2 hydrocarbon recycling is not required for this process. In another embodiment, there is provided a method of manufacturing vinyl chloride, under sufficient conditions, a suitable catalyst to produce hydrogen chloride and vinyl chloride, (a) ethane, optionally ethylene, oxygen source and a chlorine source in a reactor containing the steps of providing a step of mixing, the second reactor effluent is reacted catalytically in the second reactor and (b) the hydrogen chloride, lacking essentially hydrogen chloride and comprising the step of recycling to step (a) and (c) the second reactor effluent. Optionally be performed under conditions to react and to extinguish the C2 hydrocarbons, the second method may eliminate the need for recycle C2 hydrocarbons thereby. Either method may include a hydrogenation unit for conversion to ethylene dichloride cis / trans-1,2-dichloroethylene.
