PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for evaluating azimuth anchoring energy by using an IPS(in-plane switching) mode cell. SOLUTION: The azimuth anchoring energy in an IPS mode liquid crystal display device can be determined in the following processes. (a) The numerical correlation between the direction βopt of the apparent optical axis and the electric field intensity E in the liquid crystal layer is obtained based on the optical values measured by changing the electric field intensity E in the liquid crystal display device. (b) The formula of the theoretical relation between βopt and E derived by introducing the term of the azimuth anchoring energy into the theoretical formula for continuous body is compared with the measured numerical correlation. (c) The term of the azimuth anchoring energy is used as a parameter for fitting.
