PURPOSE: To easily, rapidly and accurately detect trace amounts of residues adhering to a sample surface by wiping the target part of the sample surface with a detecting medium, and bringing the target part into contact with a reagent which is colored when reacted with the material wiped off. ;CONSTITUTION: Several drops of a reagent 5, which is colored when reacted with, e.g. an amino acid, are added to a reagent 4 in a glass tube 3 to prepare a coloring reagent. A certain area of the surface of a subject (sample) for measurement is wiped with a detecting-medium water-absorbing part 14 (fiber or porous resin) at the end of an applicator-shaped detecting medium 1. If the sample surface is dry, the surface can be wiped effectively by wetting the water absorbing part 14 with an appropriate aquatic medium (purified water, aqueous solution of surfactant, or the like). Next, the detecting medium 1 wiped is dipped in the coloring reagents 4, 5 in the tube 3 and reacted, and coloring caused by residues adhering to the sample is either measured with a spectrophotometer or visually observed by use of a standard color scale.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
