PURPOSE: To shorten the time until the voltage of a battery reaches a set value so as to shorten the fully charging time of the battery by selecting either the output voltage of a current detecting circuit or the voltage corresponding to the voltage of the battery and controlling the charging current of the battery based on the selected voltage. ;CONSTITUTION: During the period until the voltage of a battery 3 reaches a set value in the initial stage of charging, the output voltage of a current detecting circuit 4 is selected by means of a switch circuit 7 in accordance with the output of a voltage comparator 6 and the charging current of the battery 3 is controlled so that the current can be maintained at a prescribed constant current value based on the selected output voltage. When the charging of the battery 3 advances and the voltage of the battery 3 reaches the set value, the voltage corresponding to the voltage of the battery 3 is selected in accordance with the output of the comparator 6 by means of the switch circuit 7 and the charging current is reduced so that the voltage of the battery 3 can be maintained at the set value based on the selected voltage.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
