SOLUTION: The synthetic aperture radar placed on a moving platform such as an aircraft or satellite comprises a transmitting and receiving antenna 1, a transmitter for supplying a high frequency signal to the antenna 1, a receiver for amplifying and demodulating a signal received by the antenna 1, a pulse compressing unit 4 for improving range resolution of the output signal of the receiver, an aperture divider 15 for dividing the received series of pulse train, an azimuth compressing unit 5 for improving an azimuth resolution of the divided train to obtain a complex image, an interference circuit 17 for obtaining a phase difference of two complex images obtained by the unit 5, and a controller 18 for deciding a base line length of the aperture and controlling the divider. In this case, the length can be variably controlled by the controller 8.
