Method has the following steps: setting of a number, n, of threshold values in memory, each relating to a specific distance; sampling n times of a reflected signal; storage in memory of a number, n, of sampled values; and comparison of each sampled signal with its corresponding threshold value. If the sampled value is higher than the threshold value distance calculation is triggered and the sampled value is used to replace the existing value. The invention also relates to a corresponding device that comprises a number of sensors mounted on a vehicle. Each is sampled in turn to acquire a series of reflected signal values.
