PURPOSE: To obtain the subject polymerization catalyst at a low cost and in a high yield by reacting a specific alkylidene complex with a metal salt comprising a 1A group metal in the periodic table and an alcohol or amine. ;CONSTITUTION: The catalyst for the ring-opening polymerization metathesrs polymerization of a cyclic olefin is represented by formula I (R¹ is 1-20C alkyl, aryl, phenyl, etc.; R²-R⁴ are H, 1-20C alkyl, aryl, 1-20C silicon-containing alkyl, etc.; R⁵-R⁸ are H, 1-20C alkyl, aryl, 2-20C alkenyl, cyano, halogen, etc.; R⁹ is 1-20C alkoxy, halogen, etc., which are electron-donating ligands coordinated on M; i,j are 1, 2).
