PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a medicine having an excellent melamine production- inhibiting action, and further to prepare a beautifully whitening cosmetic containing the melamine production-inhibiting agent. ;SOLUTION: This beautifully whitening cosmetic contains pectin, a pectin hydrolyzate of the formula (n) is 0 or a natural number) or their salts. The pectin is marketed and used as an emulsifier in cosmetics. The pectin hydrolysate is obtained by hydrolyzing the pectin with an acid or an enzyme such as pectinase and subsequently subjecting the hydrolysate to an ultrafiltration treatment or gel filtration treatment to give a fraction having a polymerization degree of 1-10. The pectin and its hydrolyzate, e.g. oligogalacturonic acid, have free carboxyl groups, and easily react with various kinds of bases to form the salts (e.g. Na). The beautifully whitening agent usually contains the melamine production-inhibiting agent in an amount of 0.01-10wt.%.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
