PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce operator's load for the detection of a line cut defect. SOLUTION: The image defect detecting method generates a display image 20 obtained by thinning an object image 10 to display it and a reference image 30 thinned while storing the connection of a non-significant part 12 at the time of detecting line cut defects 13 of a significant part 11 on the object image 10. The display image 20 is compared with the reference image 30 and difference positions are obtained as line cut defect detection positions 41. Consequently an operator can detect the line cut defects 13 which can not be detected from the display image 20 and can execute work such as the repair of defects while grasping the whole object image 10 by the display image 20 displayed on a display part.
