PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a workpiece transfer method in a spindle moving type vertical machine tool that can improve an operation rate by shortening workpiece transfer time. ;SOLUTION: A spindle moving type vertical machine tool has a spindle with an almost vertical rotation axis; a spindle stock; a chuck provided at the lower end of the spindle; a control means for controlling the movement of the spindle stock, the dividing rotation of the spindle and opening/closing of the chuck to attach/detach a workpiece to/from the chuck; a workpiece feeder provided with a plurality of movable workpiece placing parts 19 and capable of positioning two workpiece placing parts 19 simultaneously in a workpiece delivery position and a workpiece receiving position; and workpiece placing auxiliary members 191 erected at the workpiece placing parts 19. The spindle stock is positioned in the workpiece delivery position, and the spindle is divided to place the workpiece in the workpiece placing part so that grip jaws 271 of the chuck and the workpiece placing auxiliary member do not interfere with each other.
