PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a KANA/KANJI converting and processing device excellent in operability, and easy in inputting. SOLUTION: A written character string handwritten and inputted from an input pen 2b to a tablet 2a is segmented to written character string by a character string recognizing part 4 and becomes the written character string through character recognition. A write direction discriminating part 5 discriminates whether the write direction of written character string shows lateral write inputting, vertical write inputting or one-character inputting. Japanese syllabary (KANA)/Chinese character (KANJI) conversion is performed only to the written character string inputted orthogonally with a ruled line displayed on the display screen of LCD 2c and oppositely, the KANA/KANJI conversion is not performed to the written character string written and inputted onto ruled lines in the direction of ruled lines. The prepared document is stored in a memory 7.
