The present invention relates to the prolonged release pharmaceutical composition of sodium phenytoin comprising the sodium phenytoin mixture and one or more hydrophilic polymers. The mixture forms a matrix upon contact with an aqueous medium and the matrix retains at least approximately 20% phenytoin after one hour. It also refers to the process of preparing the extended release pharmaceutical composition.
