The present invention relates to a process for removing nickel from water with pH higher than 6.8, particularly from underground and potable water. Water, containing excessive amount of nickel is filtered through a layer of manganese(VII) oxide with particle size ranging from 0.3 to 0.9 mm and volume weight in the range of 1750 to 2500 kg.me3, whereby water pH is maintained within the range of 6.8 to 7.5.
