The present invention relates to an apparatus and/or process for deposition of monolayer and/or murilayers of amphiphiles and non-amphiphiles inter-digitated in amphiphiles on a substracte, and the products of the process. The apparatus has a container in the form of two concentric "Teflon containers with a lid supporting a holder for fixing a substrate plate in a plane parallel to the surface of water and orifices in teh walls at lower level of the inner cylinder and inlet/outlet tubes for pumping water in or out of these containers at controlled ratre to raise the level of water inside the container. Amphiphile monolayer is formed on the water layer by injecting exact qauantity of amphiphle solution on it. The monolayer is then transferred on to the substrate by raising the water level till it touvches the substrate plate, and then lowering it. By repeating the process multilayer films are built up on the sustrate plate. Substrate plates conted with thin layers by theis appartus and process ares useful in many types of devices like biosensors, optical limiting devices, electronminescent devices, insulateing coating and anticorrosive coatings.
