Permanent deformation of hair comprises applying an aqueous solution of an amphoteric polymer, applying a reducing composition containing sufficient metal and/or ammonium ions to precipitate the polymer in situ, shaping the hair, allowing the reducing composition to act, applying an oxidizing composition, allowing the oxidizing composition to act, and rinsing the hair. - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for a multicomponent product for permanent deformation of hair, comprising a solution of an amphoteric polymer in a medium containing water and optionally a solvent; a reducing composition comprising a reducing agent capable of cutting keratin disulfide bonds and sufficient metal and/or ammonium ions to precipitate the polymer; and an oxidizing composition comprising an oxidizing agent capable of reestablishing keratin disulfide bonds.
