The stem comprises a vertical tube (70) with a grip part (701) at its top end and a side tube (80) with a clamp (801) for a handlebar grip at one end and two connecting parts (803, 804) at the other end for pivotally securing to the sides of the top end of vertical tube. The connecting parts combine to define a space (805) in which two grip blocks (90, 91) are mounted. A side channel (809) inside the side tube has one connected to this space and the other end connected to the clamp. A push rod (809) mounted inside the side channel has one end in contact with the handlebar grip. Each grip block includes a grip part (903, 904) at one end for engaging with the grip part on the vertical tube and has a slanting surface (905, 906) at the other end for contact with the push rod. A quick-release mechanism (100) is used to move the two grip blocks together or apart.
