Mail sorting method, uses geographic code recognition system to sort mail according to geographic coordinates instead of postcode

A geographic code recognition unit (22) is used to detect at least one component on a mail item label for selecting a delivery point defined on the basis of geographic coordinates. A sorting system (23) is then used to sort the mail. The geographic coordinates correspond to an XY set. An independent claim is also included for a mail sorting method in which the mail is labelled with at least one service code for indicating that the mail requires special handling, comprising the detection of the code using a code recognition unit and sorting the mail on the basis of the detected code. The service code can be a change of address, funeral card, priority, mail storage, notice of failure to deliver mail or localisation service.
