The vertical distance between the base (15) and the top edge of the root container (10) is increased such that plant is kept in a root container for a certain period. The vertical distance of the base to the container top edge is further increased associated with a next period. The root cluster is kept or brought near the base to create an open space above the root cluster in the container. The open space is optionally filled partially with additional substrate, which is then available during the next period for root growth for the next period.
