The method involves dividing the available frequency band of the transmission medium into at least two sub-bands (FB1,FB2), the first having a lower cutoff frequency of 100 kHz, and the second having an upper cutoff frequency (e.g. 10 kHz) selected so that the sub-bands do not overlap. Any desired information transmission is possible in the first sub-band, while digital transmission is performed in the second sub-band. An independent claim is included for an alarm system.
