A method and device for determining a starvation condition for an access category at an access point in an IEEE 802.11 based wireless network employing multiple wireless access categories. A first access point traffic load value is determined actual access point traffic, and compared with a predetermined second access point traffic load value. A starvation condition indicator is generated if said comparing shows that said first access point traffic load value is about or exceeds said predetermined second access point traffic load value. The first access point traffic load value is determined by obtaining for said actual access point traffic a number of successful transmissions and collisions, and dividing said number of successful transmissions and collisions by said number of successful transmissions and collisions and a number of empty slots. The predetermined second access point traffic load value is determined as l/(l+(AIFSN-2)), wherein AIFSN is a number of timeslots of an AIFS parameter of said access category. An access parameter of said access category is amended in response to said starvation condition indicator.
