This improved method, employs data from pyrolytic analysis of reservoir rock. Productivity characteristics are inferred from productive, marginal and non- reservoir rock. The sample is taken from known depth and location in the field. It is prepared for pyrolytic analysis, in which values are obtained for LV, TD and TC (see later). The pyrolytic oil productivity index is calculated from: POPI = ln(LV+TD+TC) x (TD)/TC). ln is the natural logarithm, LV the weight in milligrams of hydrocarbon released per gram of rock at the static temperature of 180[deg]C before programmed pyrolysis. TD is the weight released between 180[deg]C and Tmin; TC is the weight released between Tmin and 600[deg]C; and Tmin represents the total weight of hydrocarbons released in that temperature range.
