Described are so-called host cell-associated herpesviruses such as Marek's disease-like virus (MDV) of poultry and Varicella Zoster virus (VZV) of man and vaccinations against disease caused by these viruses. A vaccine is provided that is directed against an infection caused by an herpesvirus that is essentially host cell associated comprising a recombinant viral genome derived from a herpesvirus, wherein the genome allows recombination essentially free of the host cell.
