Intravaginal drug delivery devices for the administration of an antimicrobial agent

An intravaginal antimicrobial drug delivery device comprising: (a) a therapeutically effective amount of at least one antimicrobial agent dispersed throughout a biocompatible elastomeric system that forms the delivery device, (b) wherein an initial loading release profile comprises release of between 5 mg and 600 mg of the at least one microbial agent during an initial 24 hour period of use, and (c) wherein the delivery device consists essentially of a ring. Particular antimicrobial agents are Metronidazole, Acyclovir, Clotrimazole, Fluconazole, terconazole, Azithromycin, Erythromycin, Doxycycline, Tetracycline, Minocycline, Clindamycin, Famcyclovir, Valacyclovir, and Clarithromycin.
