Non-pathogenic, spore-forming, Gram-positive, lipophilic bacterial strain that produces extracellular lipase and also hydrolyses fatty acids and grease

Described is a Gram-positive microorganism, Bacillus megaterium , strain SB3112, that effectively and degrades fats, oils and grease. A composition comprising this microorganism and a method for degrading fatty acids and grease are also disclosed. Availability of glycerol to the biodegrading microorganism was discovered to enhance biodegradation. Figure 1 shows the efficacy of various microorganisms to degrade grease.
