The level (5) of each charge is determined by tilting the furnace (1). Following its return to the operating position (21a), optical measurement is employed, or the determination is made by estimating the angle of tilt (alpha ). From this, the melt bath level (5a) is determined. From this determination, the spacing (6) between the oxygen-blowing lance (4) and the melt bath level is adjusted.
