The stacks of timber are vertically offset with respect to each other so that adjacent stacks are located at different heights, the difference in height between two adjacent stacks being at least equal to the height of one spacer between two timber packets (1) in the stack. The stacks are placed parallel to each other and one after the other on the timber dryer floor. Each stack comprises at least two identical height timber packets (1) separated by spacers (4) and containing parallel pieces of timber which are separated within the packet by further spacers (8). All of the spacers extend at right angles to the timber length direction and the height of the spacer between the packets is at least twice the height of the spacer inside the packet. An independent claim is also included for a dryer chamber for carrying out this method, the chamber floor containing parallel peaks separated by troughs with horizontal surfaces. The peaks are at least as high as one spacer between two timber packets.
