The method involves determining a stator winding current, a stator winding voltage and a rotor winding current. Temperature in two positions in a rotating synchronous electric machine is determined using a theoretical model of the machine and the determined current and the voltage values. The rotor speed is measured and the temperature estimates are effected in dependence on the measured speed. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) an apparatus for monitoring a rotating synchronous electric machine (b) a memory medium on which a computer program is stored for controlling a rotating synchronous machine.
