Determination of polychlorinated dioxins and furans involves automatically removing sample gas from a gas stream, and collecting compounds for subsequent determination. The total amount of polychlorinated dioxins and furans is automatically calculated from the result of this determination as a parameter of the whole group of compounds, preferably as a toxicity equivalent. Determination of polychlorinated dioxins and furans involves automatically removing sample gas from a gas stream over a period of 1-72 hours, preferably 6-24 hours, collecting compounds for subsequent determination by adsorption or absorption, enriching, and determining the compounds selected from tetra-, penta- and/or hexa-chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and/or dibenzofuran optionally after desorption. The total amount of polychlorinated dioxins and furans is automatically calculated from the result of this determination as a parameter of the whole group, preferably as a toxicity equivalent. An independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the above process.
