Process for the preparation of tetrahydropterin and tetrahydropterine derivatives by hydrogenation of pterine and of derivatives of pterine with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, characterized in that hydrogenation is carried out in a polar reaction medium and used as catalysts for hydrogenation d-8 metal complexes, soluble in the reaction medium, containing tertiary phosphines, tertiary phosphanes as ligands, bidentate ligands with tertiary amino groups and tertiary phosphino groups, or bidentate ligands with two tertiary phosphine groups, forming bidentate ligands with the atom metallic a ring of 5 to 10 members.
