A process for cleaning or inhibiting the accumulation of dirt from a membrane module (20) having one or more filtration membranes (6, 23) immersed in reservoir water (18) in a reservoir (12; 412; 512; 612 ), where the module (20) operates in an aeration regime in which a gas flow produces bubbles (36) from under the membranes (23) in the reservoir water effective for cleaning or inhibiting the accumulation of dirt from the membranes, and the gas flow alternates in repeated cycles with a duration of no more than 120 seconds between a higher flow rate and a lower flow rate, the lower flow rate being less than half of the larger flow rate.
