An analog of 8- (anilino) -1-naphthalenesulfonate (ANS) described by the formula: ** (Formula) ** In which: N is 1 to 5; and X is independently isopropyl or tert-butyl, and in which the ANS analog is capable of reacting with 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrazone hydrochloride (MBTH), or one of its analogs, to produce a dye product having a deviation reduced by at least about 35% compared to the dye product produced in the reaction of the ANS and MBTH, or one of its analogs.
