GRAFT POLYMERS OF KETO-ALDEHYDE CONDENSATION OR CO-CONDENSATION PRODUCTS

Graft polymers of ketone-aldehyde condensationand co-condensation products and/or the monovalent orpolyvalent metal compounds thereof are described, inwhich condensation product consistsa) of symmetrical or asymmetrical ketones containingaliphatic, araliphatic, cyclic or aromatic hydro-carbon radicals with at least one nonaromaticradical,b) an aldehyde of the formula R-(CHO)n, wherein n = 1 to2 and R can be hydrogen or an aliphatic, aralipha-tic, aromatic or heterocyclic radical, andc) optionally of carboxyl,sulpho, sulphamido, sulphoxy, sulphoalkylamine orsulphoalkyloxy groups,to which product anionic and/or nonionic and/or cationicunsaturated monomers have been grafted. These graftpolymers are outstandingly suitable as dispersants forinorganic binder suspensions and solutions, for aqueousclay suspensions and solutions or coal/water suspensions,as retention agents, thickeners, in particular foraqueous systems, and as agents for preventing theswelling of clay in aqueous systems.
