摘要

The present invention is a process forhydrophobically modified emulsion polymers, polymersobtained thereby, waterborne coating compositionscontaining the polymers and a coated substrate coatedwith the coating composition. The emulsion polymer isformed by first combining hydrophobic polymeric compoundand .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and surfactantto form a mixture and subjecting the mixture to highstress techniques to form stabilized particles of thehydrophobic polymer and monomers, in the aqueous phase,said particles having a particle size between 50 and 500nm. The polymerizable material within the particles ispolymerized to form a hydrophobically modified corepolymer. Additional monomers including at least one .alpha...beta.-ethylenically unsaturated hydrophilic monomer are thenadded to the core polymer and polymerized by emulsionpolymerization, to form a hydrophobically modified core-shellemulsion polymer. To form a coating composition,the emulsion polymer is combined with additionalcomponents such as pigments, crosslinkers, plasticizersand solvents. The coating is applied to a substrate toform a coated article.
