A gear profile for orbitalgear transmission is disclosed inwhich an outer gear (10) andan inner gear (30) are included.At least one of the gears isconstrained for orbital motionto impart rotary motion to theother of the gears. Theprofile of teeth (34) of inner gear(30) is sinusoidal at least in thevicinity of pitch circle (36) ofthe gear (30) and the pitchcircle (36) coincides with the pointof inflection (52) of thesinusoidal profile of the teeth (34).The outer gear (10) has a pitchcircle (25) and the point ofinflection (19) of the inner gear(30) rolls across the point of theprofile of teeth {14) of the outergear (10) where the pitch circle(25) intersects the profile of theteeth (14). Orbital transmissionsystems are disclosed in whichone or the other of the innergear (10) or outer gear (30) ismounted on an eccentric (63) which is driven by an input shaft (64). An orbitcontrol plate (67) or regressive gear (110) restrains one ofthe gears (10 or 30) for orbital motion and the plate (67), or regressive gear(110), has a braking member (80) for fixing the plate (67), orregressive gear (110), stationary. In order to place the transmission intoneutral, the brake (80) can be released so that the orbit controleplate (67) is able to rotate rather than to constrain the outer gear (10) orinner gear (30) for orbital motion.
