CD-ROM AND CD-ROM SOFTWARE COPY-PROTECTION METHOD

The invention relates to a technology based on two interrelated concepts, namely software protection and hardware protection. Hardware protection involves a physical signature on the CD medium. The signature is common to only one series of CDs, meaning that the physical signature protecting a specific software program or package is unique. Software protection involves a computer program which identifies whether or not the CD being used is the original CD by checking for the presence of the physical signature and enabling the software keys as well as specific encoded data embedded in the software and other data generated at the time of installation. As with the physical signature, the program varies with the software program or package to be protected. Both types of protection are incorporated at the time of manufacture of CDs intended for subsequent marketing.
