The invention relates to automated method and device for perceiving an object in a spatio-temperal space represented by a digital signal comprising periodical sequences which are organised into data successive sub-sequences, wherein a signal is characterised by temporal signals, thereby producing a spatial signal and at least one pair (11A, 11B), (12A, 12B), (15, 16), (25, 26) and (35, 36) of spat-temporal neurones which is used under an application software control. The inventive method consists in determining and characterising the borders of an object by means of an oriented border temporal signal, the valueα of the orientation angle of the border at a point together with a co-ordinate axis and by a binary or not validation value Val-α associated with α. The boards can be also characterised by the variation δα of the orientation angle of boarders associated to a corresponding validation signal Val-δα. The applications of said invention for detecting and characterising the borders of a traffic lane for a vehicle, for traffic safety, a scene monitoring, for correcting a geometric optical distortion, stabilising a moving video picture and for characterising motion are also disclosed.
