The method involves transmitting data between a data control centre (1) and a number of machine readers (8). The centre (1) can transmit to each machine (8) a data reset instruction. The method is designed to inscribe data onto or read data from memory on a card (14) with elements (15-17). For protection against fraudulent use, the reloading of transmitted data is subject to an authorisation system and the data received is only validated for use after verification by the authorisation system. The data can be prepared and verified only if secret data is known which is stored in both the memories of the central control and the security memory of the machine to which the data is transmitted.
