SUBSTANCE HAVING INTRAHEPATIC GLYCONEOGENESIS INHIBITING ACTIVITY AND FOOD OR FOOD ADDITIVE CONTAINING THE SUBSTANCE

A substance having intrahepatic glyconeogenesis inhibiting activity that is effective in the inhibition of conversion of glycogen in the liver to blood glucose; and a food or food additive containing the substance. A composition derived from the xylogen of plant Salacia reticulata is contained as a main component, which composition inhibits the expression of gene for glyconeogenesis rate determining enzyme in the liver to thereby lower the level of blood glucose. The food or food additive containing the substance having intrahepatic glyconeogenesis inhibiting activity comprises the above composition. As the composition, there can be mentioned, for example, wood powder obtained by pulverizing the xylogen of plant Salacia reticulata; an aqueous solution or aqueous suspension obtained by extraction thereof with an organic solvent or by boiling the same with hot water of 80°C or higher and subsequently conducting filtration; or solid contents obtained by subjecting the aqueous solution or aqueous suspension to water removal and drying.
