A security device and method for visually scrambling a graphic element to provide a scrambled image and imparting the scrambled image to a substrate to form an invisible latent image that can be visualized by rendering the invisible latent image temporarily visible and descrambling the temporarily visible latent image. The device further comprises a decoding device for visualizing the graphic element by rendering the latent image ternporarily visible and descrambling the temporarily visible latent image.
