The invention relates to a means for influencing the solidification structure of magnesium and magnesium alloys and a method for production thereof. According to the invention, the means is made of silicon carbide particles, essentially completely intercalated in an aluminium matrix, or aluminum alloy, whereby the amount of silicon carbide particles in the matrix is 35 to 65 vol. %. According to the invention, the means can be produced whereby a given amount of silicon carbide (SiC) particles are prepared and 65 to 35 vol. % of the total amount of the means is infiltrated in the form of liquid aluminium or a liquid aluminium alloy into the amount of particles and a complete intercalation of the SiC particles in the metal brought about, after which a cooling of the mix occurs.
