In a process to reduce furan and dioxin emissions in cement clinker production, hot effluent gas is tapped (22) from the main gas flow to a mixing chamber (23) and cooled for surrender to an electrostatic dust separator (26). Cement clinker is transferred from a rotary kiln (18) to a cooling unit (19) and separated from the tertiary air flow (32). ??After cooling and electrostatic dust separation, the quantity of tapped gas (31) is less than the sum of secondary air drawn through and by-passing (32) the rotary kiln. The cooled and filtered air (31) is circulated only within the clinker cooler (19), from which the clinker cooler recuperative air is removed. The dioxin and furan gases are broken down in the clinker cooler (19) and/or broken down by high temperature treatment in the rotary kiln.
