A novel device for clarifying an exhaust gas, characterized in that it has an S component capturing material having the performance capability wherein when a 150 ppm SO3-5% O2-N2 gas is allowed to flow through 5 mol of the material with a SV of 30,000/hr, at a temperature of the inlet portion of the material of 300°C, for 1 hr, the material captures 85 % or more of the S component having flowed through the material, and when thereafter a 3000 ppm H2-600 ppm C3H6-3000 ppm O2-3.5 % CO-N2 gas is allowed to flow through the material with a SV of 30,000/hr while elevating the temperature of the inlet portion of the material from 250°C to 750°C at a rate of 10°C/min, the S component having been captured by the material is released from the material in an amount of 5 % or less of the total amount captured; a method for clarifying an exhaust gas using the device; and a catalyst for clarifying an exhaust gas for use in the method. The device for clarifying an exhaust gas can be suitably used for suppressing the deterioration by an S component of the performance capability of a clarification catalyst for NOx.
