The invention relates to a method for generating amplified spontaneous emission of coherent short-wave radiation, especially for pumping transient short-pulse x-ray lasers. Said method requires few technically complex means and enables the assembly of corresponding appliances with high repetition rate and higher average output in desktop dimensions. According to the invention, a target is irradiated by means of only one sub-ns-range pump beam consisting of a front part and a main part and having temporally modulated intensity distribution. Over a period of several 100 ps, the front part of the pump beam has a level of intensity that is smaller by at least two orders of magnitude compared with the succeeding short main part of the pump beam which has a maximum intensity of between 1012 W/cm2 and 1018 W/cm2.
