The invention relates to a device and method for the optimal estimation of the transmission spectrum with the simultaneous modulation of complementary sequences. The inventive device consists of at least: a transmitter comprising a convolutor, a modulator and an antenna, and a receiver comprising a demodulator and a decoder with output filtering. The transmission method comprises at least the following steps, namely: encoding of one or more Krönecker deltas having identical or different amplitudes and any time or frequency combination, convolution with each of the complementary sequences, and emission of the resulting signal. The reception method comprises the following steps, namely: adapted filtering or correlation of the signals received with each of the complementary sequences forming the set used for transmission, and summation of the results from said correlations in order to produce the spectral and temporal characteristics of the medium. The inventive method enables the noise effect to be minimised.
