The invention relates to a lightning protection system for buildings comprising a ridge element that is made of copper, cleans the roof, prevents the formation of moss during unfavorable weather conditions, and is provided with an irrigation conduit for a liquid. An arrester line allowing lightning bolts to be safely intercepted is required in order to improve the protective effect against lightning strikes while preventing incrustation of foreign matter on roofs. Furthermore, the lightning bolt is to be diverted in a harmless manner with the aid of relatively simple means. The inventive lightning protection system is characterized by the fact that the ridge element forms an integral part of the arrester line of the lighting protection system and is provided with a tubular ridge conduit (9) which extends parallel to the ridge element (3) in the longitudinal direction, is connected in an electrically conducting and liquid-directing manner to the irrigation conduit (4) so as to distribute a liquid, and alternately comprises discharge ports (11) so as to distribute the liquid, the irrigation conduit (4) being connected to a grounding system (15). Arcings from the lightning-protecting arrester line to the building are prevented from occurring in case lighting strikes.
