A resonance is excited in resonance circuit including inductor (L1) and capacitors (C1-C3) by radio frequency operation of switching transistors (S1,S2) of a converter. The lamp (Lp) is powered by a voltage greater than continuous-operation supply power generated by the converter, during start of transfer phase, according to the resonance excitation. An independent claim is also included for method for operating high pressure discharge lamp.
